It is my sad duty to notify this community of the passing of Bruce Miles. 14th January at the age of 89.

Bruce was the creator of the Wurlitzer soundfonts. He was an early trailblazer in the virtual organ world.

Sad news indeed. :(

Bruce will always be a giant in the world of virtual organs. For those who do not know, he created the sound fonts that were the impetus for the creation of the Miditzer.

Not having access to an organ to sample, or even listen to, Bruce created samples by using additive synthesis with a program called Klangsynth. He relied on his memory of what the various ranks of a Compton organ sounded like. Only those who have tried to create a sound font by any means can begin to appreciate what a monumental accomplishment Bruce's sound fonts are.

But even if creating those sound fonts had been easy, Bruce had the vision of producing the sound of the theatre (cinema) organ with what was at the time relatively inexpensive computer soundcards by Creative. After creating the sound fonts, Bruce spent many hours working with John Tay, another pioneer in the world of VTPs who is missed, and myself to find a way to use the sound fonts in a way that allowed the manipulation of stops on an organ to be simulated.

Every user of a virtual theatre organ owes a huge debt of gratitude to Bruce Miles. Without his vision and pioneering efforts, there might never have been a virtual theatre organ.
